“To survive, you must tell stories.”
-Umberto Eco There was a time when I was not a storyteller, though I do not remember it. My life has been shaped by stories; reading them, telling them, living them. I see stories as gravel roads that lead not so much to escape, but to feeling. They ride through reflection; they pass, sometimes, within enlightenment, and along the way they can stop within curiosity, happiness, nostalgia, laughter, heartbreak, tragedy, anger, unbridled pain, and even that tiny magical capacity to change a life. They can be as grandiose as love and loss or as simple as a trout eating a caddisfly, a hare bounding through Alaskan woods, a grouse bursting into flight. Regardless of which gravel road a story leads down, though, it always – always – has the potential to make someone feel. This is why I write. All photos on this website are by Emmie Jackson. |
