My Two-Cents on Writing and Why You Should Do It

11/29/2022

I was recently asked to talk about writing at my alma mater, Lingle-Fort Laramie High School. Writers tend to have an aversion to public speaking and I'm no different, but this opportunity provided a reason to consider my own practice and how I got to be where I am (if I'm anywhere at all). What follows are some of the resources I shared at this presentation: my take-'em-or-leave-'em tips for how to write, some meaningful quotes about the writing process, and some resources about who to write for and what to write about.

The thing about presenting information like this is that you never know if it will 'land' for anybody; if it will make an impact, and if that impact will be meaningful enough to be life-changing. So if it does that for you, I'm glad. Thanks for looking around.

Writing Resources

** another good method is to Google “[topic keyword] publications”. Obviously this topic keyword can be anything that interests you; fishing, trapping, gardening, baking, whatever.
** if you’re bored and find yourself at a bookstore or a library, take some time to peruse the magazine section. Usually the first few pages, in addition to listing things like the magazine editor and contributors, will have some contact information for the editorial department. Some quick internet searching of that information can yield submission guidelines.
